A nuclear insurance pool is being established to insure Turkey's first nuclear power plants in Akkuyu and Sinop.
The pool will be set up by DASK which is the Turkish Natural Catastrophe Insurance Pool, and will be the 28th nuclear pool in the world, reported Hurriyet. Insurance coverage of EUR700 million (US$829 million) will be provided for each nuclear power plant.
Mr Berat Albayrak, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, said that Turkey will have three nuclear plants by 2030. Feasibility studies are in progress for the third plant which will be located in Igneada.
The first nuclear power plant is the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, which is estimated to cost US$22 billion. Construction is scheduled to start towards the end of this year, to be completed by 2023. The second nuclear power plant will be built in Sinop, where the first reactor will be deployed in 2023.
Currently, there are 27 insurance pools covering over 440 nuclear power plants in 31 countries around the world.
