ASEAN:Free portal allows sharing of Nat CAT management info

| 22 Mar 2018

The ASEAN Insurance Council (AIC) has established CARMA (Catastrophe and Risk Management in ASEAN), a non-profit media portal for sharing awareness about catastrophe and disaster risk management information in ASEAN.

CARMA is a free easy-to-access site where users can set up their own accounts to search for data, post papers and register projects. It is designed to offer fast and convenient access to catastrophe related documents and articles in order to spread knowledge and enhance awareness of disaster risk reduction and assist management of companies and organisations, as well as individuals interested in expanding their familiarity regarding these critical issues.

Owned by the AIC and initiated by the ASEAN Natural Disaster Research Works and Sharing (ANDREWS) Committee with a mandate signed by the Chairman and Secretary General of the AIC, CARMA offers a new approach in the sphere of collaborative information sharing, rating, and the crediting of individuals and institutions for their valued contributions.

Anyone can browse the site, do searches by geography or topic, and download academic papers or projects of interest. The system automatically sends emails to interested parties or project leaders when projects or research papers meet their area of interest. Furthermore, subscribed users are routinely sent summaries or articles reflecting their area of interest and chosen topics with the user determining the frequency of email notifications.

Risk sensitive companies, insurers, reinsurers, banks, fund managers, shipping concerns, researchers, academics, institutions and interested parties can upload papers and projects for approval by the CARMA editorial team, by subject including Cyclone, Drought, Earthquake, Flood, Landslide, Pandemics, Tsunami, as well as, Disaster Risk Management among others.

The CARMA online portal will serve as a bridge for ASEAN countries to have a keener insight into their neighbours’ catastrophe and risk management systems, as well as set the benchmark for imparting essential information, collaboration and improvement.

The two main milestones of CARMA for 2017/18 are:

  1. Earthquake Details and First Alert System – All recent earthquakes in this part of the world can be seen on the main page and the in-depth details can be seen once you log in. The portal also automatically sends special earthquake alerts (6.2 on the Richter Scale and up, Asia only) to all subscribers within the first few minutes after an event happened, which is a unique function that has the potential to save lives.
  2. Weather Forecast – Daily Rainfall, Temperature, Wind and Mean Sea Level Pressure Data can also be accessed by the subscribers for free upon logging in.
